what is the least cost of fencing? (optimization)?
a rancher wishes to build a fence to enclose a rectangular pen having area 24 square yards. Along one side the fence is to be 6 dollars per yard, while the remaining three sides are to be made of cheaper material costing 3 dollars per yard. Determine the least cost of fencing the pen.
this problem is giving me soooooo much trouble, please someone help me with this complicated calc problem!!
The four sides of the pen are L W L W
One of the L’s costs twice as much,
so cost of fence is 3 * (3L + 2W) = 9L + 6W
L * W = 24
So W = 24/L
9L + 144/L = cost function
Derivative is 9 – 144/L^2
Set to 0
9 L^2 = 144
L^2 = 16
L = 4
If all sides were the same cost, we’d minimize the amount of
fencing by making a square pen, and minimize the cost at the same time.
In this case, one of the sides counts double, so it is a little shorter.
Cost = 9L + 144/L = lengths + widths = 36 + 36.
The cost of the two dimensions is the same still,
but the lengths are different: more of the cheaper material on the widths
is used to offset the higher cost of the one side.
