Can I use a heating pad to help keep 5 week old kitten warm?
we live in a very rural area, no pet stores and no vet within 70 miles. Remaining kitten of 3 litter born to a very young feral cat. Kitten is starting to eat kitty kibble and drink warm powered baby milk on its own. Our house is all tile and cold. Mom feeds the kitten occasionally as well as cleans him but never stays with him for very long. Hence he always feels really cold! I hesitate to keep him in my bed at night because he is so small. I have put small furry stuffed animals in his basket but he doesnt like that and will not stay in his basket when the stuffed animals are in there.I put a heating pad in his basket covered with a couple of towels and he seems to love it. I am concerned with leaving the heating pad on too long. All sincere suggestions welcome as it has been heartbreaking to lose the other 2 of the litter. I have named him Lucky as he is the only surviving one. Help me keep him Lucky and alive.

I have left a heating pad on for a couple of weeks at a time when I am fostering baby kittens or puppies. As long as the kitten can get away from the heat if needed, then the heating pad should be fine. I have also filled a sock with rice and put it in the microwave to heat it. It stays hot for a fair amount of time (an hour or two). Keeping him warm is a good idea. Even at 5 weeks they can still become ill from becoming too chilled.
As far as the litter box, just make sure you put him in when he looks like he wants to go. If you need, to you can stimulate him with a moistened cotton ball and then put him so he gets the idea.
